Guin’s Leather Guide
Preface:
This is a guide written by Guinness, often called Guin, a former LS member. He left the game some time before I joined the game late last year. I have added some formatting here and there for easier reading, but otherwise content is left as-is.
Guin’s Leathercrafting Guide
This is by no means the definitive guide to Leather but I stayed pretty close to the most commons paths. Feel free to try out some new or different synths. If you plan on taking this to 60 when you hit the 40’s try some other stuff as the cost can get high, I have a few other synths that I snuck in at those levels that got me thru without breaking me (raptor skins will eat up your bank account fast). it all depends on AH trends and availability.
0-2 = Sheep Leather
(Dark + Sheepskin + Distilled Water + Windurstian Tea Leaves)
Can make some money if you buy the skins, can make decent money if you farm them
2-7 = Rabbit Mantle
(Earth + Rabbit Hide x5 + Grass Thread)
Major loss of money here unless you farm the hides, which would take forever. Sell on AH for 200-500 or just NPC them for about 40 gil a pop. you will have alot of these
7 – 11 = Solea
(Wind + Sheep Leather x2)Another money loss. again AH for less loss or just NPC them and move on.
11 – 14 = Lizard Cesti
(Earth + Cesti + Lizard Skin)Buy the cesti’s in the weapon shop in S. Sandy. A stack of lizzie skins is about 10-12k. you might get lucky on AH and sell these when a higher level leathercafter is making himantes. AH for 900-2k.
14 – 21 = Dhalmel Leather
(Dark + Dhalmel Hide + Dis. Water + Win. Tea)The first money maker. once you get to about 19 I would suggest farming the dhalmels in burb. pennisula and craft/farm. stacks of leather sell for 14-17k on AH you can easily make back all the money spent so far on crafting at this point with a lil’ farming.
21 – 24 = Dhalmel Mantle
(Ice + Dhalmel Hide + Wool Thread)Wool thread is very expensive 20k a stack or so. AH mantles for around 2k I believe so you can almost make your money back if you are patient enough
24 – 29 = Parchment
(Dark + Sheep Leather + Rolanberry)I probably started on this synth before 24, around 22-23 prob, buy rolanberries in Port Jeuno in store next to AH. Sell in Sandy or Jeuno (for Bard quest) AH. Break even or slight loss.
29 – 35 = Ram Leather
(Dark + Ram Skin + Dis. Water + Win. Tea)The whole reason I started leather in the first place was for this synth. a must have for ram farmers. follow same steps as dhalmel leather, farm/craft the last couple levels to make some good gil. stacks of leather sell for 20-22k – stack of dark crystals 4k, the tea leaves and water cast about 600 in total. so its an easy 15k+ profit.
The stretch from here to Tiger Leather gets expensive.
36 – 39 = Wolf Gorget
(Earth + Wolf Hide + Cotton Thread)Cotton thread can be expensive. NPC for a loss.
39 – 43 = Waistbelt
(Wind + Ram Leather x2 + Grass Thread)
43 – 49 = Ram Mantle
(Ice + Ram Skin + Wool Thread)
a) 49-53 = Raptor Mantle
(Earth + Grass Thread + Raptor Skin x2b) 49 – 52 = Himantes
(Earth + Raptor Skin + Lizard Cesti)
52 – 60 = Tiger Leather
(Dark + Tiger Hide + Dis. Water + Win. Tea)I started on tiger leather at 49. Believe it or not the loss in money was less at that time, hides used to sell for 300-500 they now sell for 1k, so starting it early may not be wise now.
Desynthing
As a closing note once you are in the mid 20’s you can start desynthing leather belts.
Buy the belts in S. Sandy at the Sundries store and use Lightning crystal.
NQ- Sheep Leather
HQ- Sheep Leather
HQ1- Iron Ingot
HQ2- Iron Ingot x2
Warning- Desynthing may lead to alot of exploding crystals.
It’s a good way to get sheep leather if needed and also the Ingots sell for 30k a stack. There was speculation that the success rate on this goes down as you get higher. I cant 100% confirm this, cause I don’t do it much anymore, but it did seem to be true. I mostly used this to fund my way thru the levels as well as farm/crafting ram leather. (lightning clusters can be farmed in Kon. highlands while you farm rams)
